Patch 0.5 of Path of Exile 2, called “Return of the Ancients,” added a big batch of new Runic Skills under the Kalguuran theme. These skills don’t use Mana—they use Runic Ward instead—giving players a fresh way to plan their builds in the endgame. They also don’t have colour restrictions and ignore attribute requirements, so almost any class can use them, as long as you can generate enough Runic Ward POE 2 Orbs.
Frostflame Nova
Frostflame Nova is a high-end Runic Spell that changes how elemental ailments interact. It doesn’t deal direct damage itself. Instead, it sends out a volatile ice wave that latches onto enemies already affected by Ignite. When it hits, it:
- Refreshes the duration of any active Ignite on those enemies, keeping the burn going.
- Quickly stacks Freeze on them, gradually locking them in place.
- Prevents new Ignite from being applied while the current one is still active, favoring sustained single-Ignite builds rather than constant reapplication.
The main wave covers a 4.5-meter radius, with smaller ice shards forming a 1-meter inner wave, giving Frostflame Nova multiple layers of coverage. It has a 12% base critical strike chance and deals around 81–122 cold damage. Plus, for every 1% of the enemy’s ailment threshold dealt by active Ignite per second, the skill gets 10% increased Freeze buildup and hits every 0.5 seconds until the Ignite expires. It’s perfect for builds that want to combine Ignite and Freeze effects.
Mark of Repulsion
Mark of Repulsion is a single-target Runic Skill that places a Verisium Rune on one enemy. The mark lasts up to 8 seconds, and you can only have one active at a time. The rune does nothing until it triggers:
- It activates when the marked enemy takes damage equal to 200% of its ailment threshold or dies.
- When triggered, it creates a wide-area explosion around the target, dealing physical AoE damage and knocking back nearby enemies.
This makes it great for burst damage or crowd control. You can put it on a tough enemy or elite mob and detonate it at the right moment to clear adds or reposition the fight. It costs 15 Runic Ward, has a 0.5-second cooldown, and a 0.5-second use time, so it’s fast and reactive, useful for both mapping and boss fights.
Triskelion Cascade
Triskelion Cascade is a buff-style Runic Skill that powers up your next AoE spell. When cast (20 Runic Ward, 0.45s cast, 1.0s cooldown), it gives you a 4-second buff window. During that time, the next self- or location-targeted AoE spell you cast:
- Centers on your character and spawns six additional overlapping AoE zones in a triskelion (three-legged) formation.
- Reduces the base AoE by 40% and base damage by 30%, but stacking zones creates very high damage density in the center.
The catch: the cascade adds 800% of the empowered spell’s cast time to its own cooldown, so you can’t spam it. It works best in boss fights or against clusters of enemies where careful timing can maximize damage.
Hollow Shell
Hollow Shell is a defensive, team-support Runic Spell that transfers Guard and Ward. It has a 0.6s cast time. The core effect:
- It sacrifices 100% of your current Runic Ward to release a 3-meter pulse.
- Everyone in that pulse, including you, gains Guard for 6 seconds, equal to 35% of the Ward consumed.
It’s a great emergency survival tool. You stock up Ward and then cast it before a heavy mechanic or to save the party from a wipe. The higher your Ward pool, the more Guard you grant, making it especially strong in high-Ward tank builds and group content.
Runic Infusion
Runic Infusion is a support gem that turns attacks into Ward-scaling damage tools. When you slot it with an attack:
- The attack costs extra Runic Ward.
- It consumes 20% of your maximum Ward per use.
- Grants added physical damage equal to 25% of the Ward spent.
Essentially, it lets you trade your defensive Ward pool for extra offensive power. Tanky builds with huge Ward pools get a big damage boost on every supported attack, without needing extra damage nodes. It’s a core gem for high-Ward melee or ranged builds.
Concussive Runes
Concussive Runes is a support gem focused on stun-based AoE follow-ups. When paired with a skill that can apply Heavy Stun:
- It triggers a Runic Shockwave under every enemy that gets Heavy Stunned.
- The shockwave consumes Runic Ward and won’t trigger without enough Ward.
This turns single-target or short-cone stuns into AoE damage and crowd-control bursts. It’s especially good for melee builds that repeatedly hit one main enemy while surrounded by adds, letting the shockwaves clean up nearby mobs for free.
Overall Runic Skill Design
Patch 0.5 adds new Kalguuran Runic Skills, giving players a whole new set of tools that don’t rely on Mana. Since these skills ignore attribute requirements and run entirely on Runic Ward, they encourage builds that focus on generating, stacking, and sustaining Ward buy POE 2 Orbs. This opens the door to a new “Runic build” meta that works well for both endgame PvE and PvP setups.
